Animation of the NASA InSight lander deploying its SEIS seismometer on the surface of Mars. The InSight robotic probe was launched on 5th May 2018, and landed on Mars on 26th November that year. The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) is its primary instrument, and is designed to measure marsquakes to learn more about the interior structure of Mars. The white cap is the wind and thermal shield designed to protect SEIS from external influences.
