Korolyov with mother and grandmother. Future Soviet rocket engineer Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov (1907-1966, centre) in 1908 with his mother Maria Mykolayivna Moskalenko (right) and grandmother M. Moskalenko (left). Korolyov was born in Zhytomyr in the Russian Empire, now part of the Ukraine, and grew up with his grandparents in Nezhin. His parents separated three years after he was born, and his grandparents cared for him while his mother was away studying. Korolyov would later become the chief Soviet rocket designer in the 1950s and 1960s during the space race. Photographed in Nezhin, Russia, on 24 December 1908.
