Tereshkova and Gagarin's trainer, Seryogin, after a training flight. Valentina Tereshkova (left, born 1937) had become the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 6 spacecraft from 16-19 June 1963. Soviet test pilot Vladimir Seryogin (right, 1922-1968) was later killed with famous Soviet cosmonaut and first human in space Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) when the plane they were flying during a training flight crashed. In both the US and Soviet space programmes, the first astronauts and cosmonauts had trained as military pilots. Photographed in Russia, in July 1967.
