Yuri Gagarin meets Che Guevara, in Moscow, Russia, in 1964. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, 1934-1968) became the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide, undertaking many tours and official duties. Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (right, 1928-1967) was a Marxist revolutionary and guerilla fighter who fought in the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, later travelling abroad to represent the new Cuban government in the early 1960s. This event, taking place at the Community Leaders' Conference in the Friendship House, Moscow, on 11 November 1964, was the foundation of the Soviet-Cuban Friendship Society, of which Gagarin served as chairman.
