Gagarin's memorial at the Kremlin. Guard of honour at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis next to the memorial plaque marking the interment of the ashes of Soviet hero and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968). Gagarin had become the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. He died on 27 March 1968 with Soviet test pilot Vladimir Seryogin (1922-1968) when an aeroplane they were flying crashed. Their remains were cremated and the ashes were placed in the Kremlin Wall with full military honours. Flowers are laid here every 12 April, which is now known as Astronautics Day in Gagarin's honour. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, on 12 April 2008.
