Komarov and family with Gagarin. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) is at right, with fellow Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov (1927-1967) at centre. Both would die within a few years and be mourned as heroes of the Soviet Union. Komorov's wife, Valentina Kiselyova, is at left with their daughter Irina. They also had a son. Gagarin was the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. He died on 27 March 1968 when his aircraft crashed during a training flight. Komarov was the commander of Voskhod 1 in 1964. He died when the Soyuz 1 spacecraft he was in malfunctioned and crash-landed on 24 April 1967. Photographed in Russia, in October 1965.
