Biomedical illustration of atherosclerosis in an artery. A lesion develops in the artery wall causing accumulation of macrophage white cells and low density lipoproteins. Without adequate removal by high density lipoproteins, the fats and cholesterol will form plaque and continue to accumulate. The plaque may rupture causing a blood clot to form, eventually blocking the artery and possibly causing an aneurysm.
