Light micrograph of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestinal tract. It is a motile, rod-shaped bacterium that has the ability to ferment lactose. E.coli has been a major laboratory organism for many years & as a result has one of the best studied genetic systems.
