Light micrograph of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestinal tract. It is a motile, rod-shaped bacterium that has the ability to ferment lactose. E.coli has been a major laboratory organism for many years & as a result has one of the best studied genetic systems. The information gained from the study of this bacterium has been exploited by the techniques of genetic engineering. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
