Escherichia coli. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a single Escherichia coli bacterium. Here, it is coloured black. It is a Gram- negative, rod-shaped bacillus bacteria. Hair-like flagellae (yellow) on the surface of the cell are used for motility. Escherichia coli is a normal inhabitant of the human intestine. Under certain conditions it may become harmful and cause infections in the intestinal or urino- genital tracts. Escherichia coli is also the organism that is most commonly used in genetic engineering experiments. Magnification: unknown.
