Escherichia coli. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the enterobacteriaceae bacteria Escherichia coli. They are rod-shaped, Gram- negative and motile bacteria. The cell contents is coloured red; nuclear material is blue. E.coli inhabit the intestinal tract where they play a nutritional role by synthesizing vitamins, especially vitamin K. As a facultative aerobe, E. coli consumes oxygen, rendering the large intestine anaerobic. Some strains of E. coli are pathogenic, causing diarrhoea & urinary tract infections. Magnification: x10,000 at 35mm size.
