Escherichia coli & streptococcus bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the bacteria Escherichia coli (pink) and Streptococcus sp. (red). E. coli are Gram- negative rod-shaped motile bacteria which inhabit the healthy digestive tract of humans, sometimes causing infection. Streptococci are spherical, Gram-positive bacteria that form pairs or chains. Some are parasites of humans causing throat infections.
