Escherichia coli. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a colony of Escherichia coli, a cause of food poisoning. This is a gram- negative bacilli (rod-shaped) bacterium. Other strains of E. coli cause gastroenteritis in children, while in adults they are responsible for "traveller's diarrhoea" and most urinary tract infections, such as cystitis. Most strains of this bacteria, however, are normal, harmless inhabitants of the human intestine. E. coli is widely used in genetic studies and for genetic engineering. Magnification: x22,000 at 35mm size.
