E.coli bacterium. Coloured freeze-fracture trans- mission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a single bacterium of Escherichia coli (or E.coli). It is in the process of dividing by binary fission to form two daughter cells. E. coli is a motile, rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria found as part of the normal fauna in the human gut. Under certain conditions it may become pathogenic causing infection to the urinogenital tract and diarrhoea in children. E.coli has played an important role in genetic research, in genetic engineering, and in the emergence of the biotechnology industry. Magnification: x32,300 at 6x7cm size.
