Caption

E. coli. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterium. This is a Gram-negative bacillus (rod-shaped) bacterium. The filaments around it are pili, thin strands of protein used when two bacteria exchange genetic material (conjugate). This bacterium is a normal inhabitant of the human intestine. However, under certain conditions its numbers may increase and cause infections. It can cause diarrhoea and urinary tract infections. Magnification: x32,000 at 35mm size.
