E. coli bacterium. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an Escherichia coli bacterium. This rod-shaped Gram-negative bacterium is an enterobacter, a normally harmless inhabitant of human and animal intestines. Under certain conditions, however, it may increase in number and cause infection. Strains of E. coli are responsible for gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections. This is a negatively stained example of the K12 strain. Magnification: x12,500 at 6x7cm size.
