E. coli bacterium. Computer artwork of an Escherichia coli bacterium. E. coli is a Gram- negative rod-shaped bacterium that is part of the normal flora of the gut. It has flagella (hair- like structures, lower left) at one end, that enable it to move. Some strains produce a toxin that causes severe diarrhoea and can be fatal, especially in the very young or elderly.
