False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a no. Legionella pneumophila, the cause of Legionnaire's disease, a usually fatal form of lobar pneumonia. Members of the gram negative species are small & elongated, with a double membrane cell envelope. The disease obtained its name after an outbreak of 182 cases at the American Legion convention in Pennsylvania in 1976. Magnification: X 3,000 at 35mm size. The red object at bottom of image is an artefact.
