Derek Smith, British virologist and epidemiologist in front of a 'map' of the human influenza virus subtype A(H3N2). Smith is Professor of Infectious Disease Informatics at Cambridge University, UK. He uses antigenic cartography to quantify and visualize phenotypic differences among strains of viruses or bacteria. Data from these studies is used by the World Health Organisation to select strains for manufacturing vaccines.
