Richard Phillips (1778-1851), English chemist. Phillips was born in London, the son of a printer and bookseller. He was educated first as a chemist and druggist, but after publishing a paper on the analysis of water from the spa at Bath he was drawn to mineralogical chemistry. However, he maintained an interest in pharmaceutical studies, becoming a lecturer in chemistry at the London Hospital in 1817. He wrote more than 70 papers on chemical subjects and was the principal editor of the London Pharmacopoeia for many years. Phillips was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1822, served as president of the Chemical Society and, with his brother and others, was a founding member of the Askesian Society.
