Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These Gram-positive spherically- shaped coccus bacteria are commonly found in groups that resemble clusters of grapes. They occur normally on healthy human skin, and mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth. Staphylococcus aureus may, however, cause boils, usually entering the skin through a hair follicle or an injury. This bacteria is also responsible for internal abscesses and any acute suppurative infection. Symptoms may be treated with antibiotic drugs. Magnification: x6,632 at 35mm size.
