Caption

Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a cluster of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. They are commonly found in grape- like clusters such as seen here. Staphylococcus aureus are Gram-positive, spherical (coccus) bacteria. They are commonly found on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. S.aureus may, however, cause boils, usually by entering the skin through a hair follicle or a cut. They are also responsible for internal abscesses and most types of acute suppurative infection. Magnification: x48,400 at 6x6cm size.
