MRSA bacteria. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacterium. The bacterium is resistant to most antibiotic drugs, though some strains will yield to vancomycin. Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive coccal (spherical) bact- eria with a thick cell wall (dark) surrounding it. S. aureus can cause boils, abscesses and wound infections. MRSA is of serious concern in hospitals and has been the cause of many outbreaks, particularly in geriatric wards. Its spread is very difficult to control. Magnification: x200,000 at 8x7 inch size.
