The Ladder-backed Woodpecker (Picoides scalaris) is a fairly common, year-round resident in Southern Arizona. These small woodpeckers can be found in desert scrub, mesquite bosques and oak woodlands. The Ladder-backed Woodpecker is the only woodpecker in Arizona that has a white face with joined, black eye and malar stripes. Sonoran Desert, AZ.
