These gram-positive bacteria often appear in groups that resemble clusters of grapes. Some of the bacteria are undergoing cell division (centre, lower left). Staphylococcus sp. are significant human pathogens, causing diseases ranging from minor skin infections such as boils and abscesses to potentially fatal systemic illnesses such as pneumonia and bacterial endocarditis.
