Staphylococcus bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. S. aureus are Gram-positive cocci (spherical) bacteria. They commonly occur on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. Sometimes, however, they may become pathogenic, infecting hair follicles, as well as causing boils on the skin and internal abscesses. Magnification unknown.
