The Gopher Frog (Rana capito) is declining across its range in the Southeastern United States. It typically inhabits coastal plain pine forests. The species is listed by Nature Serve as G3 vulnerable. It is listed by IUCN as near threatened. Marking endangered ranid frogs that have been reared in captivity, the Atlanta Botanical Garden's amphibian conservation program headstarts gopher frogs in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Headstarting programs offer a higher percentage of survivorship through the larval stage for release into protected habitat. Modern marking techniques for amphibians, fish and even some invertebrates like crayfish includes acrylic elastomer. Acrylic elastomer is injected just below the skin and needs to be placed where the tissue is at least semi-transparent and pulls tight against muscle tissue. Multiple colors are available so independently marking multiple individuals in a population is relatively simple.
