Osteoarthritis. Light micrograph of a section through joint tissue in a case of osteoathritis. This is a pate stage of the condition, and the join cartilage, the connective tissue that forms pads to separate the bones, has mostly worn away (fragments at upper right). The exposed bone surface (across top) has become polished and worn (dark pink areas), a process known as eburnation. There is also a cyst (round, white). Osteoarthritis is a common joint disease that affects most people over the age of 60. There is no cure, although symptoms can be relieved with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, and physiotherapy.
