Caption

Streptococcus bacteria. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Streptococcus type A bacteria, forming a chain. Streptococci are spherical, Gram- positive bacteria that typically form chains. Although most are saprophytes (feeding on dead and decaying matter), some species are parasites of humans and animals. They are also a part of the normal, healthy flora of the human respiratory, alimentary (gut) and female genital tracts. Pathogenic species include: S. pneumoniae , and S. pyogenes, which accounts for the high incidence of sore throats and tonsillitis in young children. Magnification: x13,000 at 35mm size.
