Streptococcus pyogenes. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of chains of S. pyogenes (group A Streptococcus) bacteria. The gram-positive, spher- ical cells (cocci) of S. pyogenes always divide in the same plane, which is why these bacteria tend to build up in chains. The species includes many strains that cause infections in humans, including sore throat and tonsillitis in children; scarlet fever; septicaemia; impetigo; puerperal sepsis; and rheumatic fever. Penicillin is an effective cure for most of these complaints. Magnification x3000 at 35mm size.
