Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis) dividing by binary fission. The yellow area in the centre of each cell indicates the location of the bacteria's genetic material. E. faecalis bacteria are oval-shaped and typically grow in short chains. The species is a normal inhabitant of the human intestine but can also infect the urinary tract and invade wounds or ulcers on the skin. It can cause bacterial endocarditis (heart infection) after surgery and is resistant to some antibiotics like penicillin. Magnification x60,000 at 5x7cm size. Magnification x30,000 at 35mm size.
