Caption

Streptococcus bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These bacteria divide along a single axis, meaning that they form pairs and chains of individual bacteria. Streptococcus bacteria are part of the normal flora of the digestive and respiratory systems, but under some circumstances they can be pathogenic, causing pneumonia, meningitis and other infections.
