Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This bacterium is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia, and is also a leading cause of bacterial meningitis. It can also cause sinus and ear infections, particularly in children. S. pneumoniae often occurs in pairs of chains, as here. Magnification: x100,000 when printed 10cm wide.
