Scanning electron micrograph (SEM), tinted green, of the bacteria Agrobacterium tumifaciens (small bacilli) growing on the surface of cells from the tobacco plant Nicotiana plumbaginifolia. Known as a natural genetic engineer for the ease with which it interferes with its host's metabolism, this bacterium injects cancer-causing genes (T-DNA) into a plant cell. A tumour develops which, while destructive to the plant, is food to the bacterium. Magnification: X 1070 at 35mm size. Original is BW print B242/01M.
