Halobacillus bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Halobacillus halobium bacteria (green). H. halobium is found in water with high concentrations of salt, and so is known as a halophilic (salt-loving) bacteria. These high salt concentrations would be deadly to most other forms of life, and so H. halobium is also known as an extremophile. Magnification: x9500 when printed 10cm wide.
