Caption

Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of scattered cells of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. A variety of cell forms are visible here, typical of mycoplasmas, seen on a lattice background. They are the smallest cellular organisms known (diameter 0.3-0.9 microns), similar to primitive bacteria but lacking a true cell wall. Therefore they display a variety of shapes. Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes a pneumonia- like disease of the human lungs. It is probably the most common cause of pneumonia in healthy adults, and accounts for 10-30% of all acute lower respiratory tract infection. Mycoplasma also cause pneumonia in animals. Magnification: unknown.
