Caption

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of culture of the dermatophyte fungus, Epidermophyton floccosum. The genus Epidermophyton inhabits human skin & causes athelete's foot (usually between the toes). Some species of Epidermophyton produce the antibiotic penicillin as a by-product of metabolism. The thread-like structures visible are hyphae, the vegetative elements of the fungus. Fungal growth is usually confined to the tips of hyphae, where asexual reproduction occurs by spore formation. Magnification: x500 at 35mm size.
