Wheat root meristem. Light micrograph of cells in the meristem region of a root from a wheat plant. This is a longitudinal section through the root. A meristem is a region of growth in a plant, containing undifferentiated cells. These meristematic cells are the equivalent of stem cells in animals. This image was obtained using the differential interference contrast (DIC) method. Magnification: x1100 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
