Caption

Peanut anatomy. The peanut is the fruit of the groundnut plant (Arachis hypogaea). At left is a whole peanut, while the peanut at right has been split into its two halves. The half at left (centre) includes the embryonic plant (top of nut) that germinates under the right conditions. The rest of the nut is a store of nutrients to support the germinating plant. Peanuts are a good source of E and B-complex vitamins, and protein. Peanuts can cause an allergic reaction in some people.
