Yevgeny Pavlovich Velikhov (b.1935), Russian theoretical physicist. Velikhow was born and educated in Moscow. He is mainly interested in plasma physics, having made important contributions in the study of plasma rotations and instabilities. In 1988 he was made director of the Kurchatov Institute and was made its president in 1992. His interest in plasma physics involves fusion research and Velikhov has been on the board of the international nuclear fusion programme ITER since 2009. Velikhov has also been keenly involved in promoting nuclear disarmament. Photographed in 1985.
