Titanium forgings. View of parts made from titanium destined for use by Boeing aircraft. Titanium is a metal with low density but high strength, good thermal resistance and excellent corrosion resistance. This makes it an ideal metal for the aerospace industry, either as pure metal or in specialist alloys, particularly in jet engine components. However, the difficulty of extracting the metal from its ore and processing it makes titanium very expensive. Photographed at VSMPO-Avisma Corporation in Russia, producer of about 30% of the world's titanium.
