Gastric band. Computer artwork showing a gastric band (centre) in place around a patient's stomach. Gastric bands are used to treat obesity. The band is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The pouch above the ring is quickly filled by ingested food leading to a full feeling and helping the patient to eat smaller portions. The narrow passage slows the release of food to the rest of the stomach and intestines, increasing the period of time the patient feels full for. The band can be inflated with a salt solution to allow it to be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage.
