Caption

Grytviken whaling station, South Georgia, aerial photograph. This is one of several abandoned whaling stations in South Georgia. The rusting remains of two whaling ships, 'Albatross' and 'Diaz' are seen beached by a jetty (upper centre), and many of the storage buildings are also rusting away. Grytviken was abandoned in 1965 because of declining stocks of whales. This whaling station is part of a restoration project aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of whalers and whaling.
