Fungal cultures. Petri dishes containing cultures of fungi. A variety of coloured moulds (fungi) are seen growing on a culture medium in each petri dish. Fungi are simple, parasitic life-forms which include moulds, yeasts and mushrooms. They may cause food spoilage, and a variety of human diseases such as athlete's food and candidiasis. Fungi cultured in petri dishes are used for research and diagnostic purposes.
