Aspergillus niger. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a fruiting body of the fungus Aspergillus niger, on the tip of a hyphal fila- ment. The small spheres (orange) are spores, about to be released into the air. Aspergillus species grow in household dust, soil, and decaying vegetable matter, including stale food. This species is also found in the human outer ear, where it sometimes causes otitis externa (otomycosis) - infection and inflammation of the ear canal. Magnification: x1140 at 6x7cm size.
