Mushroom crop. Crop of edible mushrooms (Agaricus sp.). Mushrooms are cultivated commercially in caves, dark cellars or specially constructed grow- rooms in which humidity and temperature are controlled. Mushrooms are grown on beds of rotted manure and chemically treated straw over which a thin layer of soil is spread. They are picked at different stages of maturity to produce button, closed cap and flat mushrooms. Mushrooms are usually eaten cooked and are a good source of protein, carbohydrate and minerals.
