Caption

Aspergillus sp. fungus. Light micrograph of the fungus Aspergillus sp., the cause of aspergillosis and mycetoma. Here, numerous conidiophores (fruiting bodies) bearing chains of conidia (spores) at their tips can be seen. Aspergillus sp. produces toxins that lead to food contamination. They may also cause allergic aspergillosis, a hypersensitive lung reaction in asthmatics and those with weakened immune systems, provoked by repeated inhalation of the spores. Mycetoma (Madura foot) may result when this fungus infects subcutaneous tissue, bone and skin. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
