Candida albicans. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans (blue) isolated from the mouth of a patient. Unidentified cocci bacteria (yellow) are also seen. Candida albicans fungus causes thrush in humans, an infection known as candidiasis. It affects the moist mucous membranes of the body, such as skin folds, mouth, vagina and respiratory tract. Its numbers are kept down by bacteria, and lack of these bacteria, such as in a patient receiving prolonged broad-spectrum antibiotic drugs, may cause the condition to flare up.
