Bitter panellus mushrooms (Panellus stipticus). Macrophotograph of the inedible fruiting bodies of this fungus. These small mushrooms are found growing in crowded tiers on the dead wood of deciduous trees, dispersing reproductive spores on the wind. These spores develop in the gills, the ribbed structures seen here underneath the caps. When fresh, the gills are bioluminescent, glowing green in the dark. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size.
