Caption

Mushroom spore print. Macrophotograph of a spore print produced by a gilled mushroom. The mushroom was a fruiting body of the Melanophyllum echinatum fungus. The cap was removed from the stem, placed on a piece of glass and covered. Overnight, millions of spores dropped from the gills to form this reddish gill pattern. Spores can grow into a new fungal body, feeding on decaying vegetation in the soil. Magnification: x1.3 at 35mm size.
