Caption

Candida albicans. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans. This fungus causes thrush in humans, an infection also known as candidiasis. It affects the moist mucous membranes of the body, such as skin folds, the mouth, vagina and respiratory tract. Its numbers are kept down by bacteria, and a lack of these bacteria, for example in a patient receiving broad-spectrum antibiotic drugs (which kill the bacteria) may cause thrush. Magnification: x6100 at 6x8.5cm size.
